Situated in a lovely Renaissance building and located in the Old Town district of Prague just a stone’s throw away from Old Town Square is Material, a spacious boutique selling handmade Czech glassware.
Inside this gorgeous space that features vaulted gray ceilings and wooden shelves you will find an array of high quality Czech glass in an array of designs that will certainly impress you, as well as massive hanging chandeliers. The glass collection is designed, produced and sold by the owner of Material, Tomáš Kysela, an avant-garde Czech glass designer. Kysela is a true designing genius: not only does he design the fantastic glass products available in his glass boutique, he also studies the technological ways of various glass making factories which manufacture his permanent collections for him and in this way can develop new complex glass making technologies. His work therefore is not finished when his design is ready. Kysela produces an extensive variety of glass: glasses called Drunken Sailor- complete with oval bottoms, which is to reflect upon ancient times when people drank from shells or out of the palms of their hands, high stemmed glasses with naturally wavy edges (from specific production procedures), vases with thick stems that change color like a chameleon with different lighting backgrounds, sturdy vases and bowls, which are handmade with the use of a technology originally invented for their production, massive and awe inspiring glass chandeliers for large interiors, glass beads for creating your own jewelry and other original designs. The interior design of the store is also the doing of this true Renaissance man, Tomáš Kysela. Among Material’s famous customers are members of the British royal family and other celebrities, proof of his innovative, fresh and high quality designs and productions. There is also a Material in Mala Strana on Maltese Square, which is close to the world famous Charles Bridge.
