The National Museum

Czech Museum of Music

A part of the National Museum permanent collections is also the Czech Museum of Music located in the former Baroque Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Malá Strana.

The church was built in the 17th century according to the project of architect Francesco Caratti. Starting from 1783 it was rebuilt several times and served as a post office, police barracks and archive, among other things. The current monumental appearance of the building is a mix of several architectural styles including early Baroque and Classicism. Especially impressive is the grand assembly hall. The permanent exhibition called Man – Instrument – Music presents musical instruments not only as evidence of great craftsmanship but also as an intermediaries between man and music. You will learn about the history of musical instruments here, as well as how musical instruments create tones. The exhibited artifacts include a piano from 1775 played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself in 1787. The whole exhibition is spread over a space of 1,000 m2 and is architecturally original and accompanied by light and sound effects. Short-term exhibitions that are dedicated to significant personalities in the world of music and interesting exhibits are often held in the museum. Lectures and concerts of classical music also take place here. The Czech Museum of Music is open every day with the exception of Tuesday from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. The access to the whole building is barrier-free.
