Romanesque architecture is architecture descended from Roman Times. This type of architecture was the signature style of Europe during the Middle Ages. Inspired by the classical civilizations of antiquity, Romanesque architecture is characterized by wide massive walls, mighty towers, round arches, ornate colonnades, cross vaults and solid piers, and to the eye appears to be a mixture of Roman and Byzantine styles. Romanesque architecture bloomed into the intricate Gothic style in 12th century France. Prague has a few Romanesque style buildings including a beautiful basilica and three impressive rotundas. Romanesque structures are simple in their beauty and elegant in their symmetry.
