Brno's architecture has caught the interest of the New York Times daily newspaper so much that it included the Moravian metropolis in its prestigious chart “52 Places to Go in 2016.”
Brno was picked for the 2016 list thanks to its minimalist architecture that dates back to the interwar period between WWI & WWII, and also for the quality of its hip bars and restaurants. Apart from the emblematic Villa Tugendhat, the work of the German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe that was designated a National Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001, modern architecture enthusiasts typically also appreciate the Agudas Achim Functionalist synagogue by Otto Eisler, the Avion Hotel and the Zemanova kavárna, both by Bohuslav Fuchs, and the ERA coffee house by Josef Kranz, featuring a charming, colorful interior.
The New York Times recommends to combine the exploration of modern architecture in Brno with a visit to one of the city's best bars, coffee houses and/or restaurants. They are especially fond of the Super Panda Circus bar, Bar, Který Neexistuje (The Bar Which Doesn’t Exist), the Lucky Bastard Beerhouse, the Simplé and Pavillon restaurants, and the Coffee Fusion and Cafe Mitte coffee houses.
