The Czech Chamber of Architects has published the list of buildings nominated for this year’s prize, which includes the boutique Šlikova 16 residential project in which Svoboda & Williams is offering the final two apartments for sale. The Czech Architecture Award ceremony and gala evening will take place in November.
The prize’s international jury of experts, assembled for the 9th year by the Czech Chamber of Architects, selected from 307 entries—projects that showcase a distinctive architectural quality, blend into their surroundings appropriately, and provide a benefit to society. The shortlist of 31 buildings includes nine diverse residential projects, from residential buildings and family houses to apartments and cottages.
The complete reconstruction and extension of this apartment building in Prague’s Břevnov neighborhood by BY architects relied on the duality of the original design, but also added new inputs. The street-facing facade has a preserved, only slightly fine-tuned historic character, while the outer wall facing the courtyard is updated with terraces and an elevator. “Balconies aren’t a standard feature of apartment building renovations in Prague, unlike in other major European cities. Sizable terraces add an extra living space—a contact to the outdoors,” the architects wrote in their report. At Šlikova 16, the effect is enhanced by the charming views of the city that residents can enjoy from their balconies.
The investor divided the building into only 10 units. Each floor has two apartments with practical one-bedroom or two-bedroom layouts. “The nomination is proof that Šlikova 16 is a truly high-quality project where even the slightest detail received particular attention. Great interest from buyers also confirms this. To date, only two one-bedroom apartments remain for sale,” says Jan Mráz, senior property consultant at Svoboda & Williams.
