Josef Riedel was once called the glassmaking king of the Jizerské Mountains and Anna was his wife. In the little town of Desná, where the important Riedel family has made a lasting impact, two mountain residences named Anna and Josef are currently being built. Both houses, nestled unobtrusively in the pristine natural landscape, will offer the highest possible level of comfort and sustainability and privacy.
About the project
The new build Anna and Josef houses are being built in semi-seclusion yet will be easily accessible from the town center. The stone buildings are designed by the QARTA Architektura studio, which prides itself on creating buildings that meet current needs yet stand the test of time. The houses will be expertly crafted using the highest quality materials, in a style that is both spectacular and understated. Both will be surrounded by a large private garden landscaped by Flera studio with water features, a fire pit, and a seating area shaded by tall trees. The expected completion date is the end of 2025.
Houses
The residences boast an impressive 250 sq. m. living area and a basement with a cedar wood sauna and glazed wall facing the garden, a lounge with access to the garden, a bathroom, and a closet. The ground floor will consist of a living room with an open plan kitchen, a dressing room, a toilet, and a foyer. A master suite with its own dressing room and bathroom and two additional bedrooms with bathrooms are on the upper floor. Plenty of daylight and beautiful views will filter in through triple-glazed windows with aluminum frames. Floors will be wooden and cement in parts, ceilings are cement screed. Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware. Interior doors will be floor-to-ceiling and frameless, some will have milk glass panels. In winter, the hanging wood-burning fireplace will create a feeling of coziness. The houses will be handed over fully equipped, including a top-of-the-line Poggenpohl kitchen. Both come with a covered parking space and a garden with a seating area. They are also self-sufficient in terms of energy—they have private wells, sewerage treatment plants, and electricity from photovoltaic panels (also electricity from the public grid). Access to the plots is via a road that is maintained year-round.
Location
The land that the houses will be built on is situated close to the impressing Neo-Romanesque Gothic Riedel family tomb made of golden sandstone. The town of Desná, about an hour's drive from the outskirts of Prague, lies on the border of the Jizerské and Krkonoše mountains and offers complete civic amenities—shops, restaurants, a popular bakery, and medical services. There are also sports grounds, the nearby Souš water reservoir is surrounded by an inline trail, and cultural events are held in the Riedel Villa, which is right by the two houses. Other local attractions include the cog railway from Tanvald to Harrachov, several popular ski resorts, and the many cross-country skiing trails within easy reach. You can get to any one of the myriad hiking trails directly from the houses and walk to a waterfall or the Černá Desná Stream. The region is home to several unique features: the Jizerské Mountain Beeches are the first Czech site to be listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and the Jizera Dark Sky Region, offering an increasingly rare experience—being able to gaze at a clear, starry night sky.
