Telč

Visit the charming town of Telč and fall in love with Moravia today.

Telč dates back to 1099 and is famous for its main square, which is lined with pretty pastel colored houses from the Renaissance period – these houses are, in fact, superb examples of Czech / Italian Renaissance architecture - some of the best that you can see in the Czech Republic. Telč's chateau is equally as important and was in the past remodeled from its original Gothic state to its Renaissance appearance today. The whole town has been protected by UNESCO since 1992; the town is surrounded by a system of small lakes and ponds, which makes it all the more whimsical, and also provides for a great setting for sports and leisure at any time of the year. It is of interested to note that you can follow marked trails from the center of town to the nearby forest where you will find more lakes, the Lake of Snakes and the Lake of Love, to be exact – whimsical names for a whimsical place! The town’s Renaissance facades and Chateau are due to wealthy Zachariáš of Hradec and his noble wife Kateřina of Wallenstein. Zachariáš was a fan of Italian Renaissance architecture after witnessing it firsthand on a trip to Italy. Master architects and workers were invited to the town where they reconstructed the chateau and the main town square, which had been previously damaged due to fires and a Hussite sacking. The town features many little wine bars, cafes, restaurants, and pubs.
