Olomouc is an attractive city in Moravia home to various sights and the Palacký University of Olomouc.
This educational hub has over 25,200 students (the highest density of students in Central Europe), giving the city a true university feel and atmosphere. Located in the east of the Czech Republic and situated on the Morava River, Olomouc boasts numerous architecturally interesting buildings and religious structures, large picturesque squares, Baroque fountains and more. The largest square in Olomouc is adorned with the Holy Trinity Column; standing at 115 ft (35 m) this is the largest Baroque sculpture in the Czech Republic. Protected by UNESCO this column that was built between 1716 and 1754 and is, according to UNESCO “one of the most exceptional examples of central European Baroque artistic expression”. Olomouc is home to other interesting sights and monuments including Olomouc Castle compound with St. Wenceslas Cathedral (founded before 1107), the Romanesque Bishop's Palace, the impressive Baroque Visitation of the Virgin Mary church on the Holy Hill that was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1995, and the 15th century Town Hall with its unique Socialist astronomical clock.
