Old Town

Powder Tower

Located off of Republic Square and attached to the Art Nouveau Municipal House, this impressive Gothic tower is one of the original 13 gates to Prague's Old Town.

The Powder Tower dates back to 1475; under the reign of King Vladislav II Jagiello this tower was constructed and known then as the Mountain Tower. It wasn't until the 17th century that it would get its current name the Powder Tower as it was used as a store house of gunpowder. The tower measures 65 meters high and is home to a permanent exhibition that introduces the other gorgeous historic towers that Prague has to offer. The gallery also affords breathtaking views of the city – you only have to climb 186 stone steps to get there first. The tower was meticulously renovated in the 1990s.
