The beautiful Baroque Troja Chateau near the Prague zoological garden is home to the permanent exhibition of the City Gallery Prague and also holds short-term exhibitions.
The permanent exhibition was inspired by the history of the chateau and adjusted to the chateau interiors, so that it would not overshadow them. The exhibition is divided into two parts; while “The Architecture and Design” part is dedicated to the history of the building inspired by a suburban Roman villa and provides information on its architect Jean-Baptiste Mathey and authors of decoration of the building, the “Chinese Chambers” exhibition in three Chinese salons created in the second quarter of the 18th century presents wall paintings with Chinese landscape and architecture by an unknown author who drew inspiration at the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century from travel books on China. The early Baroque chateau was built between 1678 and 1695 and its decoration was completed in 1703. It is surrounded with a beautiful geometric garden with fountains that is freely accessible. In the building you can also find a cafe and a book shop and also short-term exhibitions of the City Gallery Prague are held there. If you are interested in a guided tour, do not forget to reserve a term at least one week in advance (this service is available for groups above five people). The chateau is closed during the winter season from November till the end of March.
